DATELINE Hollywood,  Calf — For the first time, filmmakers focusing on important stories about the climate and our planet will have a dedicated marketplace for their work. The Hollywood Climate Summit has announced the addition of the Hollywood Climate Summit Film & Television Marketplace, to be presented as a program of the Summit this year, from June 24 to June 28th in Los Angeles. The Marketplace will serve as a launchpad for the growing number of impactful and entertaining stories about the environment, developed in response to an unmet need that matches filmmakers with distribution opportunities. The event will be hosted as a special program accompanying the 2024 Hollywood Climate Summit, known for its record of attracting thousands of mission-aligned television and film executives and creators.  The Hollywood Climate Summit Marketplace is produced in collaboration with Wildmotion; Brian Henderson, former VP of Business Development at RED Digital Cinema and Lisa Samford, former Executive Director of Jackson Wild for over 20 years joining as executive producers of the program.

Heather Fipps, Co Founder of the Hollywood Climate Summit noted “The Hollywood Climate Summit Film & Television Marketplace will create a first of its kind access bridge for distribution ready climate stories to connect with acquisitions teams and buyers. After five years of cultivating a community of thousands of international storytellers committed to climate action and intersectional environmental justice, we know first hand that there are hundreds of entertaining, engaging, dynamic, and powerful stories that are imbued with themes of climate and environmental values waiting to reach audiences of all kinds.”

Lisa Samford, Executive Producer of the Hollywood Climate Summit Marketplace  added, “While these stories are often included in the most prestigious festivals around the world, they rarely make it to the mainstream. In my experience, that’s a distribution issue, not a content issue.” She concludes, “The reason we don’t see climate stories on our screens is not a crisis of the imagination,  it is a pipeline problem exacerbated by historic inequities and access barriers that exist across the entertainment industry. This is a real effort to change that.”

The Marketplace will offer screenings of the year’s best climate stories in documentary, fiction, unscripted series, and short films, curated by an esteemed panel of filmmakers and executives across the narrative, documentary, and nature spaces. The projects selected for the market will be supported by curated buyer matchmaking strategies.

Brian Henderson, executive the marketplace producer notes, “Additionally, opportunities will be presented for projects in development to engage with commissioners, development executives and studios looking for ways to engage top creators and meet their mandates. Providing these talented filmmakers who have messages that need to be shared the opportunity to get distribution for their films is a powerful motivation for the marketplace. It’s a first for planet-centric storytelling“
